Bad Ischl and the Salzkammergut – from its history to the present day

In 1656, the region around Ischl was first referred to as "Salzkammergut," highlighting the high economic value of salt mining for the Habsburgs. For centuries, the salt trade shaped the areas around the Ischl saltworks and ensured lasting prosperity.

It was only in the 18th century that the scenic spa town slowly came into the sight of the monarchy and became a magnet for wealthy travelers.

Bad Ischl experienced a boom as a spa town in the 19th century. In the 1820s, doctors established Bad Ischl as a health resort and recommended brine baths and mild mountain air to guests. The success of Archduchess Sophie's spa treatments, dubbed the "Salt Princes," soon made the town a social hotspot of the monarchy. Magnificent hotels, country houses, and spa facilities were built to meet the demands of wealthy visitors.

From 1849 to 1914, Emperor Franz Joseph I used Bad Ischl as a summer residence, and in 1853 he became engaged to Elisabeth ("Sisi") here in what is now the museum villa.

In 1906 the place officially received the suffix "Bad" (spa town), and in 1940 it was elevated to city status.

Today, Bad Ischl has 14,107 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2025) and presents itself as a vibrant center of the Salzkammergut region. In the Entente Florale Europe competition for quality of life, the town won a gold medal, achieving the highest rating ever awarded. In 2024, Bad Ischl, along with 22 other municipalities in the Salzkammergut, was named a European Capital of Culture, thus solidifying its historical and cultural significance far beyond Austria's borders.

Bad Ischl boasts a top-notch school infrastructure,

Specialist doctors, hospitals, and retail shops are available. Culturally, one can expect regular events and traditional festivals throughout the year; the inhabitants of the Salzkammergut region hold traditions in high regard. The weekly market on Fridays, with locals and visitors alike dressed in dirndls and lederhosen, serves as a regular meeting place and social hub.

Bad Ischl and the Salzkammergut region, with its 76 lakes and

With its countless mountains, it's a livable spot on earth that has established itself as a hidden gem alongside the "famous" places like Kitzbühel, Salzburg, etc.
